Getting Started

Taking the first step toward therapy can feel daunting, but you don’t have to do it alone. We created this page to ensure you know exactly what to expect, how the process works, and what you’ll need to get started.

Free Telephone Consultation

We begin with a free 10-15-minute phone consultation to get to know you, answer your questions, and help you determine whether Birchview is a good fit. This is also an opportunity to discuss your goals and get a sense of the treatment process.

If we decide to move forward, you can schedule an appointment for an initial consultation.

What Therapy Looks Like

  • In most cases, we begin with weekly or twice-weekly sessions, depending on how severe or interfering your symptoms are. 

  • As we move forward, we track your progress, review goals, and adjust strategies as needed. 

  • Treatment is typically short- to medium-term, although some clients may stay in active work longer, depending on complexity and goals. 

Fees & Insurance

  • Birchview is in network with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Rhode Island.

  • We will submit claims to BCBS and you are only responsible for your out-of-pocket costs.

  • Reimbursement rates vary widely, often in the 50–100% range after deductible, depending on your plan.

  • We are out of network for all other insurance providers. You can check with your insurance to determine if they will reimburse you for a portion of the fees.

  • Many clients use Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) to cover therapy costs. 

Telehealth / Virtual Sessions

HIPAA-compliant video sessions if you are located in Rhode Island or a PSYPACT state

  • A computer, tablet, or smartphone

  • A Web Camera for video sessions

  • A reliable high-speed internet connection

  • A quiet, private location for the session

  • An email address to receive session links and paperwork
