Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Treatment in Rhode Island
Helping You Break the Cycle of Obsessions and Compulsions
At Birchview Center for OCD & Anxiety, our team specializes in providing evidence-based treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in a supportive, compassionate environment. OCD is a common but often misunderstood mental health condition that can interfere with daily life, relationships, and overall well-being. Our goal is to help you gain control over symptoms and reclaim the freedom to live according to your values—not your fears.
Understanding OCD
OCD affects approximately 2% of the population and is characterized by:
Obsessions: Recurrent, intrusive thoughts, images, or urges that cause distress (e.g., fear of contamination, worries about harm, unwanted taboo thoughts).
Compulsions: Repetitive behaviors or mental rituals performed to reduce anxiety (e.g., excessive handwashing, checking, counting, reassurance seeking).
While occasional unwanted thoughts are common, in OCD these patterns become persistent, distressing, and time-consuming, often taking up hours each day. Without treatment, symptoms can worsen over time.
Our Approach to OCD Treatment
Birchview uses gold-standard, evidence-based therapies for OCD. Together, we create a customized treatment plan that supports your needs and empowers meaningful, lasting change.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapies (CBT) is a specific type of psychotherapy that focuses on understanding the thinking and coping patterns that maintain and exacerbate OCD symptoms.
We use several CBT strategies to help you learn skills to develop healthier responses and coping strategies.

1. Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)
ERP is the most effective, research-backed treatment for OCD. It involves gradually facing the thoughts, images, or situations that trigger anxiety while resisting the urge to engage in compulsive behaviors. Over time, this process helps reduce fear and break the OCD cycle.
2. Cognitive Therapy
Cognitive therapy is usually used to enhance ERP or to help people engage in ERP. It teaches skills to raise awareness of and challenge unhelpful thinking patterns that fuel OCD. Common thinking errors include overestimating threat, exaggerated sense of responsibility, and an intolerance for uncertainty.
3. Mindfulness and Acceptance Strategies
Mindfulness-based interventions and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) help clients relate differently to their OCD symptoms and move towards living a meaningful life by focusing on value-driven actions.
What to Expect in Treatment
Comprehensive Assessment:
We begin with a detailed evaluation to understand your symptoms, triggers, and goals. We also help you determine how to measure progress over time. The assessment sessions are 55 minutes and may take 1-3 sessions to complete.
Personalized Treatment Plan:
Your plan may include ERP and other supplemental CBT strategies, delivered in weekly or twice-weekly sessions. Duration of treatment will depend on the severity of your symptoms and your preferences. Typically, people need 12-20 sessions of treatment for OCD.
Practice Beyond the Office:
CBT involves practicing techniques in between session (homework assignments) and developing in-the-moment coping techniques. We help you plan how to practice ERP in real world settings (e.g your home, public places).
Progress Tracking:
We monitor symptom reduction and adjust strategies to maintain momentum.
Specialized Services for OCD
Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy:Simulated environments to practice ERP for situations not easily recreated in real life (e.g. driving, flying, crowds, medical procedures).
Exposure and Response Prevention: Our clinicians have specialized training in ERP and can tailor the treatment to your specific needs.

Telehealth Options: HIPAA-compliant video sessions for clients who prefer treatment from the comfort of home. Telehealth is also used to optimize ERP practice in your home.
